CNC Routing vs. Laser Cutting
Choosing the right process depends on the material, thickness, tolerance, edge finish, and part design.
CNC routing is often the better choice for thicker materials, industrial plastics, mechanical components, pockets, holes, chamfers, and parts that require more dimensional control.
Laser cutting is often the better choice for acrylic, thinner materials, decorative parts, display components, lettering, and designs with fine detail.
If you are not sure which process is best, send us your file or drawing and we can help determine the right method.
Materials We Commonly Cut
We regularly cut and machine a wide range of plastic materials, including:
- Acrylic
- Polycarbonate
- HDPE
- UHMW
- ABS
- PETG
- Expanded PVC
- PVC
- Acetal / Delrin
- Nylon
- Other engineering plastics
Not every material is suitable for every cutting process. For example, acrylic is often a strong fit for laser cutting, while polycarbonate, HDPE, UHMW, and many engineering plastics are typically better suited for CNC routing.
File Types We Can Work With
We can quote from common CAD files, drawings, and images, including:
- DXF
- DWG
- STEP / STP
- AI / EPS
- SVG
- JPG / PNG for reference
- Other common design files
Clean CAD files generally lead to faster quoting and better results, but we can also work from drawings, sketches, or existing parts in many cases.
